"What I Want to Say: Coreforms and Keywords" — Keiskamma embroidered tapestries arrive, and we put keyword 'Movement' front and center

 

 

"What I Want to Say: Coreforms and Keywords" continues at the "PopUp Loop" Gallery Space at 23 East Madison in Chicago until Sunday, April 21. "Movement" is one of the Keywords of our art action. Coreforms include the zero (circle), the one (vertical line), the dash (horizontal line) and the tilde (swash mark).  Today, we stenciled the word "Movement" on the front of the gallery space window which invited the interaction of many pedestrians.

The embroidered tapestries from the Keiskamma Art Project, Hamburg, South Africa, arrived yesterday, and we hung these artworks and several others in our temporary gallery space.  We look forward to our vernissage on Thursday, April 18, from 5 to 8pm.

"What I Want to Say: Coreforms and Keywords" continues at the "PopUp Loop" Gallery Space at 23 East Madison in Chicago until Sunday, April 21. One Coreform of the installation/art action is the "dot" or "single stich" or tiny "mark" that is made by the artist. As artists participating in the PopUp, we consider how each of these marks creates an "overlapping" of form and concept.  We overlap our ideas and images with each other, in a collaborative effort, and we also overlap our forms in relationship to artists of the past, such as Georges Seurat, who painted one of the most popular works in the Art Institute of Chicago (if not the history of art and culture).  "Overlap" is one of the Keywords of our art action.

"What I Want to Say: Coreforms and Keywords" continues at the "PopUp Loop" Gallery Space at 23 East Madison in Chicago until Sunday, April 21. We welcomed helpers and visitors this past weekend; Kay Maple Whitten, Glenn Doering, and Christine and Johann Summers. So much was accomplished, but so much more to be done! 

"What I Want to Say: Coreforms and Keywords" — Kathryn Trumbull Fimreite installs "We Live Under the Same Sky" and participates in keyword stenciling

 

Chicago-based artist, Kathryn Trumbull Fimreite installed her multimedia work titled "We Live Under the Same Sky" at 23 E. Madison. The unique work, which projects a video of the embroidering hands of Keiskamma Artists Veronica Betani and Cebo Mvubu on a patchwork of watercolor and writing, is part of the ongoing art action "What I Want to Say: Coreforms and Keywords." Kath also helped Deborah Doering stencil on the front window of the temporary gallery. DOE Projekts thanks Kath for her fine work!

"What I Want to Say: Coreforms and Keywords" continues at the "PopUp Loop" Gallery Space at 23 East Madison in Chicago until Sunday, April 21. We've begun to work on and install several new pieces including stencils and prints using "coreforms" and "keywords."  Coreforms include Zero and One. Keywords include "Art, Capitalism, Movements, Nature and Value." A vernissage is scheduled for Thursday, April 18, from 5 to 8 pm. 

"What I Want to Say" — DOE Projekts' Art Action at 23 East Madison Street, Chicago

The "PopUp Loop" Gallery Space at 23 East Madison in Chicago is a new location for an "art action" led by DOE Projekts. We've begun to work on and install several new pieces including stencils and prints. The art action is titled "What I Want to Say" and will extend from March 10 to April 23, 2013. A vernissage will be held on Thursday, April 18, from 5 to 8 pm. 

'Re-thinking Soup' to 'PopUp Loop' — DOE Projekts visits and engages 'Placemaking' art spaces

What makes a place inviting? What qualities and activities makes people want to visit, re-visit, and contribute?

In December 2012, DOE Projekts visited and participated (in various degrees) in University of Illinois' last "Re-thinking Soup" program, Jane Addams' Hull House exhibition "21st Century Home Economics" (specifically the work by Carole Lung) and Fenn House's final community fundraising event, led by Laura Shaeffer. 

Qualities that made us want to linger:  intellectual engagement, aesthetic displays, good lighting, good food, interesting conversations. 

Activities that invited us to participate: question-and-answer sessions, invitations to contribute our work, clear needs and avenues for support.

DOE Projekts has been offered the 23 East Madison "Pop Up Loop Space" for March-April 2013. It is once again "our turn" to "make a place" for  friends, family, and many others in a vacant store front at the Madison-State "Zero Point" in Chicago. We have begun to question, explore and create. We want to build upon our "JUST US AT WORK" efforts in Kassel. Your suggestions, participation, and support are welcome.

The Art of Placemaking — a forum for sharing ideas on how artists create 'Place' through a social art practice

Glenn and Deborah Doering, DOE Projekts, participated in The Art of Placemaking, a forum sponsored by the Rebuild Foundation, University of Chicago, and the Bruner-Loeb Forum.  The forum focused on artist-led and culture-initiated development. Presenters at the first session included Walter Hood, Kennedy Smith, and Carol Coletta.

Part of the forum included visiting several sites slated for creative community use by Theaster Gates and his Rebuild Foundation.

Another part of the forum included speaking with other workshop participants about innovative artist collaborations with architects, designers, community residents, and sponsors.

After completing The Art of Placemaking forum, we visited another artist-led community project, SHoP at Fenn House, founded by Laura Schaeffer.
