Workbook: Luftwerk on Collaboration

Luftwerk (Petra Bachmaier, Sean Gallero) hosted DOE Projekts (Deborah Adams Doering, Glenn N Doering) in Luftwerk's Chicago studio.

We asked them “What makes a great collaborative art work?”

Both Petra and Sean agreed that a great collaborative work involves mutual aesthetic sensibility and intuition -- it as if one person completes the sentence of another person, and the collaborative sentence makes a beautiful and significant new meaning.

In terms of their own work, the duo strive to create a direct sensory response, especially in relationship to the architecture of space and light. They want to heighten viewers’ response to the space, and show visitors new ways to interact and participate. They have created work at several historical sites in the US and abroad.

“Space expands and goes beyond itself” said Petra, and noted that she had been reading about “volume over mass” as she and Sean are preparing for upcoming exhibitions. One current prototype includes red gas tanks as transmitters of sound.

Sound is a significant component of many of Luftwerk’s works -- they have often collaborated with composer Owen Clayton Condon (https://vimeo.com/61727280)

Petra and Sean began to collaborate after meeting each other at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1990s, when both were students.

One of Luftwerk’s newest installations is titled “Shift” and is currently exhibited at the Chicago Cultural Center:

We asked Luftwerk to choose keywords related to the coreforms in their work:

Petra: Experience, Place, Space
Sean: Discourse, Nature, Technology

We thank Luftwerk for their hospitality and look forward to continuing our conversation.

Workbook: William Kentridge, Jane Taylor, and Other South African Artists We Know and Care About — Learning More and Reflecting On Collaborations

It was a weekend to listen, learn, reflect, and plan.
DOE Projekts (Deborah Adams Doering, Glenn Doering) attended "Virtues of Bastardy: Mixed Metaphors and Collaborations in the Studio" at the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society, University of Chicago. Statements we remember and value from the presentation by William Kentridge and Jane Taylor:

1. Collaboration obligates us to "exceed ourselves."
2. The purpose of a collaboration is to do something we have never done before.
3. Find the "least bad failure" when collaborating.
4. Let us think with our hands together.
5. There is always an ongoing battle between structure and spontaneity.
6. Collaborations may ignite the erotic — "eros."
7. "Absurd" is a productive way of understanding the world.
8. Invention and fabrication are causes for celebration.

After the presentation, we remembered and reflected on our collaboration, and collaborators, in Kassel 2012. We discussed the future of DOE Projekts.

Workbook: Expo Chicago "More Love Hours"

DOE Projekts has been invited by Dilettante Studios (www.dilettantestudios.org) to participate in Expo Chicago, Navy Pier, Chicago, Sept 19 - 22. We will be part of a 20+ artist team.

With the help of Frank Verciglio and his assistant Joe, we revised our initial idea. Frank and Joe helped us re-build the art crate and two side crate-cabinets.

We then turned to our trusty family "DOE Projekts" team, and spent a great weekend together, painting the cabinet-crates, and creating a shelf to be positioned underneath the crate-cabinets.

DOE Projekts has been invited by Dilettante Studios (www.dilettantestudios.org) to participate in Expo Chicago, Navy Pier, Chicago, Sept 19 - 22. We will be part of a 20+ artist team.
We began by sketching ideas, then communicating with John Preus, founder/director, and lead artist.
We then obtained a used crate that formerly transported a large horizontal art work.
We will rebuild the crate with the help of Frank Verciglio.
