DAY ONE

The Summers family has left for Germany for almost four weeks. 

Deborah and Glenn and 'DOE Projekts' have been invited to intervene by residing in their home with Max, their dog. We are invited to work and create art here, a continuation of My Workbook: Coreforms and Keywords 1.01. 

On the drive from our home to theirs, I read Glenn two newspaper articles from the New York Times. One was about James Turrell, his use of action, location,and light in his art work. The other described how "where we are shapes who we are." 

In the latter, the author describes research that suggests that changing contextual situations can shape and reshape us quickly — even when we have made only a short journey from one part of town to another. 

In the Turrell article, the writer states "Through dozens of conversations...I found him willing to examine almost any idea, so long as it didn't require any self-reflection. I would ask...about his place in the art world, or his faith, or lack of it, or how he feels about the [Roden] crater as he grows older and the forces of obsession and mortality collide — and each time he would frown and say something like, 'Well, you know you just have to accept things as they are.' ... Growing up Quaker, he was always being told to nurture 'the light within.' At 70, he seems more interested in the light without." 

So, we begin the project with these textual cues: accept things as they are, understand that context shapes our work. Yet, discussion about these articles led us to acknowledge that the counter-thesis "who we are shapes where we are" is also valid.

"My Workbook: Coreforms and Keywords 1.01" — Peripheral Visions at Garis & Hahn, NYC

"My Workbook: Coreforms & Keywords 1.01" is an ongoing art action by Deborah Adams Doering and DOE Projekts. On June 15, 2012, from 2 to 7 pm, Garis & Hahn Gallery, 263 Bowery Street, NYC, held a "Finessage" for their exhibition titled "Peripheral Visions: Contemporary Art from Austrialia."  As part of the Finessage, Garis & Hahn hosted DOE Projekts' Coreform "Stencil Bomb" art action. Gallery visitors and pedestrians interacted with the temporary works throughout the afternoon and evening.  DOE Projekts thanks gallerists Mary Garis and Sophie Hahn for their hospitality and help in the realization of these Coreform Stencil Bombs!

"My Workbook: Coreforms & Keywords 1.01" is an art action by Deborah Adams Doering and DOE Projekts. 

Doering began exploring concepts related to "core language of form" and "core forms" (now Coreforms) after receiving her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Doering's concept of Coreforms includes the zero (circle) seen as a one (vertical line) or a hyphen (horizontal line). The tilde (swash) represents a movement through space from one position to another.

On June 5, 2013, Doering used Keyword "Nature" as a point of departure for a Coreform in Central Park, New York City.

On May 31, 2013, D.A. Doering, Denise Laurin-Donatelle, and others, used Keyword "Nature" as a point of departure for a Coreform near the Washington Bridge in Washington Heights, New York City.

"My Workbook: Coreforms & Keywords 1.01" is an art action by Deborah Adams Doering and DOE Projekts. 

Doering began exploring concepts related to "core language of form" and "core forms" (now Coreforms) after receiving her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Doering's concept of Coreforms includes the zero (circle) seen as a one (vertical line) or a hyphen (horizontal line). The tilde (swash) represents a movement through space from one position to another.

These interrelated forms are signifiers (a linguistic unit or pattern) created to engage both individuals and our growing global society, a society experiencing rapid movement in perspectives, ideas, and socially-engaged consciousness. Coreforms' signification (meaning) is multivalent and depends on context. The forms are foundational to text (texting, digital imaging, messaging). As both counterpoint and continuation of Coreforms, Doering and DOE Projekts explore Keywords, additional signifiers with multivalent signification.

"JUST US AT WORK" — Presentation to the NAEA Illinois Student Chapter

Deborah Doering was invited to make a presentation to the National Art Educators Association Illinois Student Chapter about DOE Projekt's art action, "JUST US AT WORK."  There were several other presentations by art educators and art students in the School of the Art Institute's ballroom on Thursday, April 25. It was a time for sharing various techniques and strategies for engaging students and the general public with a variety of art practices.  We thank the NAEA and the SAIC Art Education Department for organizing such a professional opportunity to network.

"What I Want to Say: Coreforms and Keywords," a "PopUp Loop" Gallery Space art action at 23 East Madison in Chicago, held a vernissage on April 18. Participating artists include Denise Laurin-Donatelle (NYC), Kathryn Trumbull Fimreite (Chicago), Keiskamma Art Project Artists (South Africa: Cebo Mvubu, et al) and Deborah Adams Doering (Chicago).  Thank you to all our visitors who braved the stormy weather!  (Coreform: Raindrop. "What I Want to Say: Coreforms and Keywords" — NYC artist Denise Laurin-Donatelle's work arrives just in time for tomorrow's vernissage

DOE Projekts prepares for our April 18 Vernissage at "PopUp Loop" Gallery Space at 23 East Madison in Chicago. Participating artists include Denise Laurin-Donatelle (NYC), Kathryn Trumbull Fimreite, and Keiskamma Art Project Artists (Cebo Mvubu, et. al) and Deborah Adams Doering.  "Value" is one of the Keywords of our art action. Coreforms include the zero, the one, the dash, and the tilde.
